Samba

This document describes how holders of computer accounts at SOCS can access their home directory outside of the SOCS network using Samba. In order to access your home directory you must first establish a VPN connection with Computer Science. These shares are only available from within our VPN.

Mac OS X
- Launch the Finder.
- From the Finder toolbar select Go.
- Select connect to server from drop down menu. A new dialog window titled "Connect to Server" should pop-up.
- Type smb://storage.cs.mcgill.ca/username into the Server Address field.
- Click the Connect button. In the new authentication dialog window should appear.
- Type CS into Workgroup/Domain field.
- Type your SOCS username into the Name field.
- Type your SOCS password into the Password field.
- Click the OK button.
- If successfull, an icon titled USER should appear on your desktop. That is your SOCS home directory (your data can be viewed by clicking on the icon).
- When you no longer need to view your data you should eject the USER icon by clicking the eject icon from within a Finder window.

Windows XP
- Open the Windows Explorer
- From the Tools menu select Map Network Drive
- Select the Drive letter that you would like to use.
- Type \\storage.cs.mcgill.ca\username into the Folder field.
- Make sure that Reconnect at logon is not selected.
- Click the Connect using a different user name link.
- For User name: type CS\your-cs-user-name.
- For Password: type your-cs-password.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the Finish button and your home directory should appear after a few moments.
